The Process

Once you’ve decided to trust Svenja with your garment, the action begins. Scary as it seems, there has to be a little deconstruction to allow the magic to happen. With her knowledge of garment construction (which usually includes some unpicking along the way!) she knows what to look for on the inside, and gently separates linings, fittings and padding, keeping it all for consideration in the final work.

Other parts of the special occasion can also be incorporated - bags, jewellery, horse shoes and garters - even linings! Flowers from the day can be replicated in fabric.

You can stipulate that only materials provided are to be used, or you may be happy to have other embellishments added, such as beads, sequins, embroidery, or paint.

The panel can be any shape you desire - square, rectangle, or even several panels.

Once decided, a frame is made, covered in fabric, and the layout begins. Svenja likes to create a sense of sculptural movement across the panel, and not simply keep the dress format. Once the main features are removed and placed on the panel, the remaining fabric and linings may be sculpted into shape.
